Scouts of Germany have around 150 different associations and federations, most of them coeducational, but there are also some single-sex organizations. In Germany, scouting began in 1909 and fluorished until 1934-1935 when almost every association of the
scouts of Germany was closed and their members forced to join the Hitler Youth. In West Germany and West Berlin, the scout movement was reestablished after 1945 and in East Germany in 1990. Creating responsible citizens and also promoting the development of the youth in achieving their full intellectual, physical, social and spiritual potential is the goal of the
scouts of Germany. This can be achieved when they are given responsibility, when they think for themselves, work in teams and take risks. At the present there are around 123.686 scouts in this country.
Scouts of Germany are "trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent" as the scout law demands. Their mission is that of educating the youth so that it will play an active role in making the world a better place, thinking globally and acting locally and instilling values that will be carried further by the future
scouts of Germany.
